Lentos Kunstmuseum Linz
Today, VALIE EXPORT is internationally considered to be one of the most important exponents of conceptual media, performance and cineastic art. In honour of her 80th birthday, the Lentos, whose holdings of works by VALIE EXPORT were substantially enlarged in 2015 when the museum purchased the artist’s premature legacy, will present a selection of outstanding works. Chosen with a view to illustrating the many facettes of the artist’s oeuvre, these works, partly from the Lentos’s own collection, partly on loan from other museums, will be shown in two representative rooms of the museum’s own collection.
The theme of the exhibition focuses on the research into a »history of the body« negotiated in VALIE EXPORT’s work. On the one hand, she examines the body in its connection to technologies, machines and prostheses as a means of dissolving the boundaries of natural physical conditions, and on the other hand, the body within institutional »apparatuses«.
On the basis of artworks ranging from the 1970s to contemporary works, it is possible to trace the relationship between nature and culture and the accompanying culturalisation of the body up into the digital age. The exhibition takes the viewer through the artist’s performative actions and early conceptual photographs. These are placed in relation to »re-enactments« of old masters and to works addressing postcolonial issues in order to establish a link to deliberations on the medial representation of reality, perception and vision as technologically and socially coded.
Iconic works are complemented in the exhibition by works rarely – or never before – on display. They are presented against the backdrop of the processes of pictorial invention and thought figures reconstructed from the VALIE EXPORT Center’s archival holdings.

VALIE EXPORT gilt international als eine der wichtigsten Künstlerinnen konzeptueller Medien-, Performance- und Filmkunst. Zu ihrem 80. Geburtstag präsentiert das Lentos eine Auswahl von 30 Werken und Werkgruppen, darunter Arbeiten aus dem eigenen Bestand des Kunstmuseums, der durch den Ankauf des Vorlasses der Künstlerin im Jahre 2015 bedeutsam erweitert wurde.
Der thematische Schwerpunkt der Ausstellung liegt auf der in VALIE EXPORTs Werk verhandelten Recherche zu einer »Geschichte des Körpers« – betrachtet wird einerseits der Körper in seiner Verbindung zu Technologien, Maschinen und Prothesen als Möglichkeiten der Entgrenzung der natürlichen körperlichen Gegebenheiten, andererseits der Körper innerhalb der institutionellen »Apparate«.
Anhand von Arbeiten, die von den 1970er-Jahren und bis hin zu Werken der Gegenwart reichen, lassen sich das Verhältnis von Natur und Kultur und damit zusammenhängend die Kulturalisierung des Körpers bis ins digitale Zeitalter nachzeichnen. Der Parcours durch die Ausstellung verläuft entlang der performativen Aktionen und frühen konzeptuellen Fotografien der Künstlerin. Diese werden mit »Nachstellungen« alter Meister und mit Arbeiten mit postkolonialen Fragestellungen in Beziehung gesetzt, um an Überlegungen zur medialen Repräsentation von Wirklichkeit, der Wahrnehmung und des Blicks als technologisch und gesellschaftlich codiert anzuschließen.
Neben ikonischen Werken sind auch solche zu sehen, die selten oder nie gezeigt wurden. Verschränkt werden die Arbeiten schließlich mit dem Prozess der Bildfindung und des Denkens, wie er sich in den Archivalien des VALIE EXPORT Centers Linz abbildet.
